Australian Kindness Movement (AKM)

The idea to form a kindness movement in Australia came in 1994 after reading the book “Random Acts of Kindness” by Conari Press. A leaflet was written, encouraging people to be kinder to each other, which was initially distributed via letterboxes in Sydney suburbs. The following year the first edition of The Kindness Network newsletter was produced, which now has a readership of over 500 people. The focus of the AKM is on small acts of kindness, ones that are simple and within the grasp of all people.

In 1996 Australia’s Kindness day was launched, and with the help of a supportive media, it has grown in popularity each year. This Day is now part of an annual twelve day celebration in November, which includes World Kindness Day and the International Day of Tolerance. The remaining days are devoted to celebrating other aspects of kindness – kindness at work, being supportive of children and youth, acknowledging the special people who have shaped our lives, kindness towards ourselves, helping the environment, acknowledging the dedication and hard work of teachers, kindness and respect toward seniors. AKM is a founding member of the WKM.

The Small Kindness Movement of Japan (www.kindness.or.jp).

It is the oldest and perhaps the most famous kindness movement in the world, but Japan's Small Kindness Movement had its origin in an unfortunate incident. On a wintry morning in February 1963 in Tokyo, Mr Seiji Kaya, then the president of Tokyo University was mugged for ticking off a commuter who had jumped queue. He was saddened that other commuters did not lift a finger to help him. He decided to start a crusade and urged his student to practice it. "I want you all to be brave in practicing small kindness, thereby creating a wave of kindness that will someday wash over all of Japanese society".

He received the support of Japanese opinion leaders, and the Small Kindness Movement was born and duly endorsed by the Japanese Government. The movement’s slogan is: "Let us show whatever kindness we can, so that kindness will be the norm in society".

Today, 36 years later, there are more than 460,000 paid-up members and the movement's activities involve some three million people and corporations. It has handed out 3.4 million awards to people all over Japan for their kind deeds.  The movement went global in 1997, when it initiated the World Kindness Movement.

New Zealand Kiwi Kindness Movement

The Kiwi Kindness Movement started in early 1999. It's is one the newest WKM member. Being so new, it is presently only a small group. Its enthusiastic members however organise activities to raise its profile and generate public awareness. For example it sets up a stall in the local market to distribute freebies like flowers, plants and pots of jam. It hopes to start its newsletter soon. The Movement did not participate in this year's World Kindness Movement Conference.

Kindness Scotland (www.kindnesscotland.co.uk)

The concept of Kindness Scotland was launched on 13 November 2000 to coincide with the World Kindness Day. It started when Margery Bruce, then International Community Service Chairman for Altrusa International Inc. was invited by the Small Kindness Movement of Japan to participate in their Conference in Tokyo in 1996 to discuss ways in which like-minded organisations around the world could bring the spirit of kindness to their own countries and communities. Representatives from Scotland have attended every Conference since 1996.

The Singapore Kindness Movement
(www.singaporekindness.org.sg

The Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM) was initiated in response to Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong's call on Singaporeans to develop into a more caring and gracious society by the new millennium. PM Goh announced the SKM pilot project in July 1996, when he launched the Singapore Courtesy Campaign.

The Movement was officially established on 31 January 1997. The mission of the SKM is to inspire graciousness through spontaneous acts of kindness, making life more pleasant for everyone.” The objectives of SKM are: to encourage all Singaporeans to be kind and considerate. To create public awareness of acts of kindness; to influence and raise the standards of social behaviour and responsibility; and to promote and build membership in the Movement.

The SKM is run by a council of members from the private and public sectors. It is supported by the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts and funded by a government grant. To-date the SKM has amongst its membership 180 schools (primary, secondary, post-secondary), and 176 corporations, and 33 individuals.
