Vision
3.

The members of the World Kindness Movement

  • Acknowledge the fundamental importance of simple human kindness as a basic condition of a satisfying and meaningful life, and

  • Pledge to join together through the individual networks of each member country, to build a kinder and more compassionate world.

Mission
4.

The World Kindness Movement aims to inspire individuals and connect nations to create a kinder world.

Procedural Guidelines
Purpose and principles

5.

The purpose of the World Kindness Movement is

a)

To foster good will among the broad community --  local, national and international -- by way of kindness and in so doing, create greater understanding and co-operation between all people and all nations throughout the world; and

b)
To promote a joining of race, religion and culture.

Membership
6.

The WKM aims to involve all countries of the world.  As such membership is open to all countries subject to the following WKM rules:

a)

Kindness movements are eligible to apply for membership of the WKM as long as they officially adopt the WKM Constitution. However, they must present evidence that they are bona fide, e.g., they are an organised group, preferably registered; their members meet regularly (preferably not less than four times a year) and have regular programmes related to promoting kindness in the community.

b)

Applicants must be officially approved by the WKM before they can enjoy the privileges of the WKM, e.g., use the WKM logo (Refer to the WKM logo guide), be invited to WKM meetings, etc.

c)

There may be more than one WKM member in a country.  However, these members will form one national organization and provide one representative to attend the World Kindness Movement Conference.  If necessary, for administrative purposes, countries with many kindness movements may divide themselves into districts and then from amongst the district heads nominate one to attend the annual WKM Conference.  This arrangement may be rotated among the district heads.  Any number of observers can attend a WKM Conference but each country shall have only one vote (see para 11a).

d)

Members will engage in regular kindness programmes.  They will also encourage the practice of kindness and educate the  community about the many opportunities to project a higher kindness profile.

e)

Members will invite kindness-oriented organizations to participate and assist such organizations to work together toward common goals.

f)

To help spread the kindness message and to facilitate exchange, members are encouraged to get an email address and to set up their websites and link them with as many WKM-member websites as possible.

Non-Voting Members
7.

Kindness movements which do not meet the requirements set out in paragraph 6a to 6f, may apply as non-voting members with observer-status for a maximum period of two years after which they must either apply for full membership, provided they meet all requirements, or withdraw.   WKM Secretariat will outline what benefits Non-Voting members can enjoy but basically they can attend WKM meetings to learn from others but will have no voting rights.

Membership Fees
8.

Currently, the WKM does not levy any fees on its members. This may change depending on what the WKM decides during its annual Conference.

WKM Meetings
9.

Meetings of the World Kindness Movement will be held once a year in November.  The venue will be decided at the preceding WKM Conference.

10.

The host Kindness Movement will pay for the Conference, including cost of board and lodging for overseas delegates.  However, airfares must be borne by participating members unless otherwise agreed between member and host country.

Decisions by WKM
11.

All decisions of the WKM, including amendments to the Constitution, must be made at the annual WKM Conference.  These decisions are subject to the following rules:

a)

Each country shall have one vote; and

b)

Decisions on any matter that requires a vote shall be made by a two-thirds majority of members of the World Kindness Movement present at the WKM Conference.

12.

To take advantage of the Internet, the WKM secretariat may decide that approval for some decisions needed urgently may be sought through the Internet from all WKM members. 11a&b will apply.

WKM Secretariat
13.

As the WKM grows, it will be necessary to set up a WKM secretariat.  Officers from the host Kindness Movement where the WKM secretariat is located will double up as WKM secretariat staff.  The WKM will provide a small fund for the secretariat to manage its operations.  The amount will be decided at the WKM Conference.

Functions of the WKM Secretariat
14. The functions of the WKM Secretariat will include:
  • Responding to all WKM correspondence and inquiries

  • Processing applications for WKM membership

  • Processing requests for use of WKM logo

  • Help WKM webmaster to update and maintain the WKM eNewsletter and the WKM website

15.

For the first three years, the Secretariat will be hosted by the Small Kindness Movement of Japan in Tokyo.  After that the WKM Conference will decide whether they should continue or whether it should be rotated among founding members.
