Welcome note by Mr Koh Poh Tiong, Chairman of Singapore Kindness Movement and World Kindness Movement Secretariat of the sixth World Kindness Movement general assembly in Sydney, Australia
Dear WKM member,
I am pleased to extend to you a warm welcome to the Sixth General Assembly of the World Kindness Movement (WKM) from 28 – 30 September 2010.
WKM was established some 13 years ago and over this time, we have welcomed a diverse range of member countries from Romania to Oman. On paper, these members may appear to have little in common, but by virtue of their membership of WKM, we are all bound together for a common goal: to spread kindness in our own ways.
In our busy lives where instant gratification is the norm, we have the challenging task of convincing others of the need to champion graciousness as a key value in our daily lives. This is a long term goal but something that is achievable if we persevere.
Kindness is shown in simple everyday actions – saying hello to your neighbour, opening the door for the person after you, or even smiling to your colleague. These actions cost us practically nothing yet have the positive impact of brightening up someone else’s day.
I hope you will take the opportunity at this meeting to exchange ideas, to learn from one another, and look at how we may work together to be more effective in our efforts. Issues raised at our last meeting will also be discussed.
I am heartened to note your commitment to spread the message of kindness within your own communities. I urge you to keep up the momentum and good work to-date. Let us press on together to create greater awareness of WKM and inspire other countries to join us in our endeavour to achieve our vision for a kinder and more gracious society.
Yours sincerely,
Koh Poh Tiong
