FifTH WORLD KINDNESS MOVEMENT CONFERENCE
Singapore 17 Nov 2007
“It is indeed heartening to know that all around the world, there are similar movements like ours that actively engage the community to perform simple acts of kindness as a way of life,” opined Mr Noel Hon, Chairman of the World Kindness Movement (WKM) Secretariat and Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM) Council.
16 International delegates and 5 ASEAN members are joined by over 300 Singaporeans from all walks of life to re-affirm a commitment to help make the world a kinder and gentler place. Here to attend the 5th Conference of the World Kindness Movement (WKM), Singapore is proud to play host once again after 7 years since assuming the role of Secretariat to the International body.
The mission of the WKM is to inspire individuals towards greater kindness and connect nations to create a kinder world. Members acknowledge the fundamental importance of human kindness as a basic condition of a satisfying and meaningful life. They pledge to work through individual networks of each member country to build a more compassionate world. The WKM encourages individuals of other nations to set up their own kindness movements. It also seeks other kindness movements to join the WKM. To date, the WKM has 19 members in 16 countries, spanning 6 continents.
The Conference serves as a platform for like-minded people of different nationalities and backgrounds to exchange ideas, experiences and discuss possible collaborations. And because it is not always easy to persevere in doing good, this meeting will go a long way to encourage one another to continue making that positive difference, in all that we do, wherever we are.
Recently the WKM members came together to compile a book of kindness stories, called “Kindness Around the World”. Contributed by everyday people from Brazil, Canada, India, Japan, Scotland, Thailand and Singapore, and some as young as 4 years of age, we hope these stories will inspire many others to “try a little kindness” in their everyday living. Guest of Honour, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister For Community Development, Youth And Sports And Second Minister For Information, Communications And The Arts will officially launch the book at the Conference.
And helping us ignite this passion to show kindness more spontaneously, we are privileged to invite highly motivated speakers - Ms Elim Chew, Founder and President of 77th Street (S) Pte Ltd to share their experience with us.
Representatives from the World Kindness Movements will also share with us on their activities in their countries, which includes:
